Frontline Innovation: Medical Evacuation

Clinicians, innovators and frontline responders met at the Frontline Club to discuss how an air-ambulance idea became a trauma-care device.

On 26 May 2026 LSN held an evening at the Frontline Club in London on delays in medical evacuation. These delays remain one of the most persistent gaps in emergency medicine, from rural Britain to the front line in Ukraine.

The story began at East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA). Its emergency doctors saw that patients could deteriorate on scene and in transit because of hypothermia. Hypothermia is common before patients reach hospital, and it reduces their chances of survival. This led to a collaboration with ThermoTraumaPort, funded by the NIHR and private investors. Together they turned a frontline problem into a manufacturable, regulated medical device that can be used in some of the world’s most difficult environments.

Speakers argued that Ukraine is adopting trauma innovation faster than any other health system, and that medevac delays there cost lives every day. The evening was the first public discussion of how a new generation of evacuation-ready technologies could be deployed.
